ERMITA DE SAN JUAN BAUTISTA (PARROQUIA)

San Cristóbal de La Laguna
- Arquitectura Religiosa. Ermitas -

This hermitage, located in the Plaza de San Juan corner of Pablo Iglesias Street, next to the Historic Cemetery of La Laguna and near the Plain of Los Molinos and the Council Corral, was founded in 1582 (year where the terrible takes place plague that ravages the city, choosing San Juan Bautista as a defense lawyer against the epidemic).

The foundation was in charge of the Cabildo de Tenerife, however in 1586 the construction work had not been completed and the image was kept in the convent of Las Claras; finally, in 1595 the image of Saint John the Baptist was placed in that place. The Cabildo designed the plant of this hermitage with the intention of burying the victims of the plague epidemic.

From the 16th century, it was administered by a brotherhood of neighbors until it was ceded to the militias in 1862 for use as a provisional military hospital. In 1955 it is completely restored and in 1963 it becomes a parish, adding a side chapel on the wall of the gospel.

The exterior appearance corresponds to that of the largest of the Canarian hermitages, presenting a rectangular plan with reddish stone canteen that is preserved from the primitive factory on the main late-Renaissance and corner style façade, an Arabian tile roof and sword with two spans of semicircular arches. The cover is structured by a semicircular arch with the segments marked with pilasters of capitals composed on both sides, and two wells attached to the main facade.

Formerly this hermitage had a side entrance that was boarded up to avoid the humid north wind.

Inside we find a coffered ceiling with a mud jar structure of a pair and knuckle composed of central almizate and skirts; with eight pairs of braces carved with blades, rhombuses and stars, different from each other. The coffered ceiling runs without interruption throughout the ship.

At the foot of the ship, above the door, is the high choir. On both sides of the temple, two wells develop. On the wall of the Ep Stola there is a door that leads to a room for celebrations; on the side of the Gospel there is an arch of reddish stone that gives way to a chapel of recent invoice where the passage of the Lord of the Falls is exposed.

Extra text of Slight evocation of a hearth neighborhood, by Eliseo Izquierdo, official chronicler of the city of San Crist bal de La Laguna, from the book by carlos Rodr guez Morales Salud en la tierra! The devotion of Saint John the Baptist in La Laguna and the plague of 1582.

In 1582 the contagious evil and pestilence of landres fell on the city. The terrible disease was struck by the neighborhood with such haste and rage, with so much sa and force that, as the chronicles record, there came a time when there was no place for the burial of the bodies inside the churches, convents and other sacred precincts, as was customary, nor in its surroundings. In the face of the serious emergency that has taken place, the Cabildo agreed to enable some lands away from the population, on the other side of the Cha Marta ravine, in the open field, to bury the stinkers.

The chronicles also say that, both the look and the day in which the church celebrates the birth of the forerunner of Christ Jesus, ceases to die. The troubled neighbors interpreted it as favor of the Holy Baptist in the most winged of his two annual festivities for his intercession, the evil had stopped. Health returned and returned to teach itself in the population. It was then, on thanksgiving, please that I winged, when the Council of Tenerife, which ruled the city and the island, designated him a compatrono and committed himself to dedicate a holy house to him, which he erected as a votive temple in the last third of the 16th century next to the place where, in greater numbers than in others, the rest rested ...

THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST

I read on canvas, from the beginning of the 17th century, in baroque style and animate author. Thematically and compositionally, he comes to be inspired by the work of the same name he did in 1488 Andrea Verrochio, Leonardo da Vinci's teacher. It is a very successful canvas, where St. John at a higher height, pours the water of Jord n over the head of Jesus. The characters are represented young, with brown hair and beards, the first with the walking stick; and the second, with his feet sunk inside the river, puts his hands to his chest and crouches in a submissive attitude. A ray of light illuminates the scene, and on these characters a white dove, a symbol of the holy spirit. A series of angels sent from heaven participate in the solemnity of the moment. The figures are well defined, as are the effects of water transparency. The vividness of the colors, recovered after a restoration of the work, draws attention.

SAN PEDRO IN HIS C TEDRA

I read on canvas by an anonymous author. Small or possibly matched to that of San Antonio, located just in front of it. It is an indoor scene in which we find San Pedro in the C tedra in the foreground, dressed in the pontifical attributes: red tiara, white dawn, rain coat and red stole. In his right hand he carries the golden cross-shaped walking stick and the papal ring, and on the left he carries the keys. Attributes these characteristics of the saint.
