The Villa of San Juan de la Rambla is located about 100 meters above sea level between the municipalities of Los Realejos and La Guancha, on the Island of Tenerife. It was declared of Cultural Interest in the category of Historic Artistic Ensemble in 1993.
Despite having been inhabited by the aboriginal Guanches belonging to the Taoro menceyato, it was not until the end of the 15th century, after the conquest, that its “founder” D. Martín Rodríguez is established after the distribution of lands of the Adelantado, and begins to build the current historic center known as San Juan del Malpaís. It was not until the second half of the sixteenth century, that it took its current name giving name to the entire municipality. In 1530, Mr. Martín Rodríguez ordered the construction of the hermitage of San Juan Bautista near his home and around which the town would be formed. A compact town forced by the orography of the land, which in the past was concentrated around two main streets, the one above and the one below. However, in November 1826 a strong storm broke out that overflowed the ravines of the municipality causing great misfortunes, both of loss of human lives and serious damage to the architectural complex of the town. The architectural and urban complex is of singular beauty, thanks to the rich farmers, clergy and military who reflected their social and economic status in the construction of spectacular mansions and buildings that today are trying to protect and preserve. |
