M.Candelaria Hdez. Rodr guez: The Iron Architecture in Tenerife. 1989

In the lower part of the Santos ravine is the El Cabo bridge, a simple construction conceived by the architect Antonio Pintor and Ocete in 1982, after the successive destruction of the previous work in wood.

The bridge of El Cabo de Santa Cruz links the church of Concepcion with the Hospital de los Desamparados, being the first connection established between the two margins of the ravine. Its history dates back to the 16th century. Built in wood, it is completely demolished in 1826 because of a hall. The following construction runs the same fate, disappearing definitively in 1829. The architect Manuel de C Mara y Cruz takes over the works and builds a new bridge between 1881-1883, this time in Vilaflor wood. The task is replaced by another architect: Manuel de Ora y Arcocha, but the successive avenues of the ravine make the work disappear, becoming ruinous in 1892.

In that same year Antonio Pintor proposes the construction of a simple but resistant iron bridge. The order is placed in Barcelona and, in March of the following year, it is received in this capital. With the arrival of the pieces, hard critics are unleashed between some sectors, rejecting the Painter project. The apparent low resistance of the work is the main reason for this opposition by his detractors and Painter is forced to publish a supporting brochure.

The dimensions of the bridge are modest, not reaching 50 meters long. Supported in two longitudinal beams supported at the ends and in the center by factory work, which bracing transverse beams of smaller section, covering a width of 6 meters scarce. Of these, there are trusses composed of three central square modules and two trapezoidal modules at the ends, all of them braced by crosses of San Andr s. The union of two cross sections is also done by square modules braced with the same system. The whole set is joined by robbing.

Painter does not spare the material, obtaining a result too spectacular, taking into account the little draft to save by water in the possible floods, and that these do not exert a strong thrust, due to the little difficulty with which the water to avoid the Obst ass, in addition to the proven high strength of the material.

The work is finished in September of 1893 and then it is thought to replace the parapets of the walls of the ravine's containment with simple iron gates, not only to beautify the place, but also to make the splendid building of the building stand out more hospital, work of Ora y Arcocha (Today Museum of Nature and Man). The bridge also has two pilasters on each side with lanterns, ordered this time from Seville. Although only two arrive, the press echoes its good taste and elegance.
