The history of the Plaza de la Candelaria begins in the sixteenth century in which the Cabildo demolishes a group of houses in order to clear the surroundings of the castle of San Crist bal, leaving a large plot where to perform military maneuvers. In the eighteenth century works are carried out in the square that give it the current shape adorning it with a battery that the water companies in the area come to. A marble cross is also placed there. In 1778 the monument ' Triunfo de la Candelaria ' was inaugurated as a gift to the city of Capit n Bartolom Antonio Monta s.

In a house that has already disappeared, located next to the Palacio de Carta, the musician Teobaldo Power was born, author among other compositions, of the 'Cantos Canarios ' and the sentimental hymn of the islands.

Unique buildings of this square are the Palacio de Carta that was for many years Captain General and Civil Government of the Canary Islands and the Province and the Casino that was formerly located in an old building, premiering the new headquarters company in May 1935 .

The square wanted to contemplate the sea and in 1929 the Castle is demolished, which gave its name to the Santacrucera shopping street, which opens up new possibilities to this urban corner with the creation of a wide esplanade where you will later get up to the Plaza de Espa a.

Plaza de la Candelaria

In 1759, the palmer Bartolom Antonio Monta s, a relative and co-participant of the Indian business enterprises of the Letters, gave her a marble cross commissioned in M laga and that remained for a century and a half in its upper part. That rich patrician, without direct descendants, who left all his fortune to his kinship, commissioned at the expense of his pecunio the 'Triunfo de la Candelaria ', which provided the definitive name to the square and which is undoubtedly the most rich sculpture monument representative and with greater symbolic load of the city. To show his opulence and show his particular devotion to the Insular Patroness, he brought a work of four Guanche kings who pay homage to his image. His sculptures have been attributed to Bocchiardo. However, its basement and the pyramidal shaft are likely to be commissioned to a peninsular workshop. The inscription dated in 1778, on the four faces of the pir measures, reflects its donor and explains its meaning. That date is that of its final completion, because the sculptures were on the island from ten to ten years ago.
