In 1878, General Weyler arrives in Tenerife to establish his residence as military chief of the Canary Islands.

One of his projects was the building of a building that would serve as headquarters for the captain to be located in a strategic place. To this end, Weyler promotes the demolition of the old Hospital located at the western end of the city.

In 1868, a Society was formed in order to extend the street of the castle, from the section between the street of San Roque (now His prayer War) to the square of the Military Hospital. For various reasons the company was paralyzed. Until in 1875 there will be the last section of the main street that linked it with the mentioned square. The Plaza del Hospital had an irregular layout then hindered by various lots belonging to the Urban Building Construction Society.

While the impressive classic building of Capitan a was built, the projected square was regulated as a prelude that highlighted the symbolic character of the military building.

The works of the square continued for some years, placing in 1889 a marble fountain carved in G nova by Achille Canessa.

In the urban aspect, Weyler Square plays a fundamental role. Located in one of the city limits, it regulates the growth of this sector by ordering various projections (for example, Rambla de Pulido) and some rich suburbs.

However, as of this date, a series of reforms are initiated that progressively cut the surface of the square, in order to facilitate the traffic that circulated in the surrounding streets.

In 1925 , the architect Antonio Pintor, signed a project to reform the square on the southeast side, to give it greater curvature and widen the next street.

By 1944 , a new reform of the square is carried out on its side of the West, determined by the convenience of widening the border street to the Capitan General building. The project signed by the municipal architect Enrique Rumeu de Armas, consists of moving the wall near the square to the alignment of the facades of Galcer Street, to expand the street and sidewalk in front of the main access of the Captain to General.
