Of the Architecture of Iron in Tenerife. M candelaria Hern ndez Rodr guez. 1989

In the reforms that at the beginning of the 19th century are carried out at the Santa Cruz pier, the engineer Prudencio Guadalfajara is involved. It does so in the extension of the North dock, large construction. Guadalfajara reformed what engineer Jos de Paz y Peraza had done, who in turn had replaced engineer Eugenio Su rez galv n. Very advanced and the construction of the main pier, the marquee is placed in the southern dike in April 1913, between the two staircases made shortly before, being described as artistic and elegant in the press of that time.

In the same area was the Captain of the port, the Directorate of Health and the sheds built by the Board of Commerce. To the south was Customs and to the north the Celadur de Puertos Francos, Consumos Booth, Ru z Arteaga's warehouses and the torrero's house.

Because of its situation, it perfectly combined with the environment, since some of these constructions also used iron as an important element (tingling of the Commerce Board, urinal, kiosk, advertising stands, in addition to the Ru z Arteaga warehouses with the house of baths Las Delicias), which conform to a homogeneous set.

Of all of them, the marquee is the only one still preserved, with a perfect location, fulfilling the role of border between two opposite means: sea and land. The fact of being made of iron causes its presence to be diluted between both media ....

From simple lines, the marquee is made up of eight columns (four on each side) that supports the roof with four waters. Its slenderness can be appreciated from all points of view as it is an exempt work, contributing to it not finding another building in its vicinity. The marquee represents a logical vestige of the works of the early nineteenth century. Being one of the most unique examples where iron is used exclusively.

As it appears in the inscriptions of its columns, it was brought from Seville and carried out in the foundry of Juan Mir y Compaa, and surely it is a municipal donation. Given the double role of Antonio Pintor, as a municipal architect and as a representative of the said foundry, his intervention could be deduced.

At the Santa Catalina pier in Las Palmas there is, apparently, another similar one, which was dismantled due to its deterioration. They will follow both, surely, some Sevillian model, placing the order through cat logo.
