San Joaquin Castle is a fortification located between the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Crist Bal de La Laguna, next to the Vistabella viewpoint in the Villa Ben Tez neighborhood.

It was built in 1586 from a project by the Italian Leonardo Torriani, as a drummer to defend the city of La Laguna from possible assaults in 1586, being rebuilt as a castle in 1780.

During its period of use as a military fortification, it has passed from a castle to a military prison, and even as a dwelling place of the Spanish Military Colombophilia Corps.

In 1996, the Ministry of defense made this great fortification through a public auction having alienated the property from an individual.

Although it is currently in a state of abandonment, the property was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the year 2000.

It has a square plan and circular drums at its angles, with two parallel cracks separated by a central courtyard on its esplanades.
Its interior has been reformed in numerous occasions according to the use to which it was determined: from dust, through dovecote to military prison.

Its external appearance and its plant have not changed throughout the years.

At present it has deficiencies both in the exterior facades and in the accesses to it.

The state in which the interior of the building is located is unknown.
