BARRIO DEL MARQUÉS DE SOMOSIERRA

Santa Cruz de Tenerife
- Espacios Urbanos. General -

At the beginning of the 20th century, the lack of housing and building spaces in the city was a serious problem in the expansion of the city. That is why, the solution that was acquired was to create construction societies, which having been born for non-profit purposes later revert their ideals into economic interests with the high bourgeois of the city, became the main housing developers Social of the last century.

In this background it is where we can place the construction of the working class neighborhoods of the capital, which sought to give decent housing to families with less purchasing power in an economic way, without diminishing quality and spaces.

Already in the 40s of the twentieth century, these concessions will remain in pursuit of the arrival of the Economic Command, who will be the organ that promotes civil actions in the capital, as well as the military.

The Patronage La Candelaria build a large project in the 50s: the Barriada or Barrio del Marqu s de Somosierra. 527 homes were built, in the vicinity of the well-known and predecessor Barrio de Garc a Escamez.

The neighborhood is delimited by the Rosario General Highway to the north, to the south by the TF-5 highway, Buen Paso street, Domingo Bello Espinosa, Sans ny Barrios, Francisco Mar a N ez de Le n, Jos Espinosa Cambreleng and Poeta Francisco Left, until closed again in Buen Paso Street.

Over the years, these social properties have been sold to new tenants ...

Barrio del Marqués de Somosierra

This set of terraced houses, are divided into two large Blocks, separated by Calle Sans ny Barrios.

Two groups stand out significantly: 143 collective and 352 single-family for the workers, both with 3 bedrooms.

Likewise, it will be built to a block of 8 homes for officers with two bedrooms and an office.

The workers' houses, consisted of two floors, with four-tile roof covered with a ceramic curve with chimney. They had a back and front garden, and the main facade directly adjoined the corresponding passages. The lower floor was distributed by two bedrooms, a bathroom and a backyard with washing stone; and on the upper floor, there is a bedroom, dining room and a small kitchen with a window towards the main facade.

In some cases, to solve the problem of uneven terrain, the houses settle on semi-tannins and are accessed by stairs attached to the facade. At the ends of the rows there are protruding elements as small buttresses. On the facade they have a protruding volume covered with a roof. The great variety of colors of the facades stands out.
