SAN MIGUEL (IGLESIA DE STO.DOMINGO DE GUZMÁN)

San Cristóbal de La Laguna
- Bienes Muebles. Escultura -

Encouragement of the 16th century. Polychrome and golden sculpture.

This size is one of the oldest of this advocacy that are preserved in the municipality. Specifically, it is prior to 1577 because it is documented that in that year it was retouched and polychrome by Ruy D az and Jer nimo de Hontiveros respectively.

As it was said, it is a completely polychrome and golden wood carving that represents the Arc ngel San Miguel as it was usual in the most ancient representations, that is, with the demon at his feet (later Lucifer disappears in some of the representations of San Miguel already in the 18th century). The rest of the representation is the usual one of this Arc angel: armor, sword, shield and helmet; This is so because according to the Holy Scriptures, St. Michael has a hard battle with the Devil until he dominates it under his feet. Another fact that attests to the age of the image is that Sat n is painted black (color of negative connotations), and that it was in a worse state of conservation and care than the angel.
