MONUMENTO A ANTONIO GONZÁLEZ GONZÁLEZ

Antonio Gonz lez Gonz lez (Santa Cruz de Tenerife 1917-2002) obtained a degree in Chemical Sciences from the University of La Laguna and subsequently completed his doctoral thesis in Madrid with an Extraordinary Prize. In 1946 he obtained the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department of the University of La Laguna. A few years later he began his research on bioactive natural products obtained during the first years of the Canarian flora. Subsequently, he expanded the field of his research towards tropical plants with higher bioactivity (Mexico, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Colombia, Panama, etc.).

In 1949, the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) created a section of Organic Chemistry at the University of La Laguna and Antonio Gonz lez was appointed director of it. I worked with Professor Sir Alexander Tood for the next two years in the laboratory of Organic Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. Upon returning to La Laguna, he was appointed dean of the Faculty of Science, a position he held until 1957. In 1963 he founded the Institute of Chemical Research with the support of the Island Council of Tenerife. Later the center changed its name to the Institute of Organic Natural Products (IPNO) and is currently called the Antonio Gonz lez University Institute of Bio-organic (IUBO-AG), according to the evolution of the nature of its research. That same year, he was appointed rector of the University of La Laguna, a position he held until 1968. In 1971 he was awarded the First Chemistry Program of the Juan March Foundation.
