IGLESIA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN DE LA LAGUNA

San Cristóbal de La Laguna
- Religious Architecture. Churches -

It is a vast construction that has undergone intense modifications, since over three centuries various bodies have been added or stolen, and even in the seventies of the twentieth century, when part of its roof collapsed, it suffered a deep remodeling that has diminished the whole its original volumeic appearance.

This church was the first to be founded in Tenerife and, therefore, in La Laguna, and the matrix from which all the others left. According to various written sources, based on the oral tradition, they collect on the site that was initially occupied, by the clergy who accompany the army of Alonso Ferndez de Lugo, the first party of the Corpus in Tenerife. But it was not until 1497 when the first factory of the church was built, whose creation coincided with the establishment of municipal institutions and the administrative organization following the termination of the conquest of Tenerife. The canary of the Canary Islands Fernand lvarez, upon receiving a land date on December 21, 1497, already qualifies as a priest of Tenerife , whose designation clearly indicates that on that date the church functioned as a regular parish. However, the location of the first temple does not coincide with the current one, since, as the lagoon historian Juan Nu ez de la Pea refers in 1677, the early church was located further up, towards the north, a stone's throw from where it is located today. At present there is no trait of the primitive factory, natural surrounding, since it is to be supposed that it was a construction made with a certain hurry and with materials of little resistance (mud, wood and roof of straw). It also seems that it was the Virgin of La Antigua who presided over the main altar of that church and perhaps it was a version of the image of the Candlemas representing the Purification of the Virgin.

The dimensions of this first church must have been modest, but that was the first building of a certain consideration that was built in San Crist Bal de La Laguna and the only one for many years, so that up to 1505 served more than one instead of meeting place of the Island Council.

The original location of the Church of Our Lady of La Concepci and the first population center in this area of the city could be motivated by the proximity of the lake, with a view to facilitating the supply of water, as well as being this area the highest topographically.

Iglesia de la Concepción de La Laguna

The church lacks a frontis; the main door is extruded with two terraced columns, with Corinthian pedestals and capitals and a front n in which real weapons appear. In its outer part, the frontis behind the main chapel presents more solidity than beauty; composed of three floors with seven windows.

In the interior two rows of four columns and five arches of red stone, with pedestals and equal capitals (with less height in the central nave), divide their three ships throughout their length, appearing at their head part of the old main chapel and the new one in its background, finishing the church in the trascoro in other three chapels divided with solid pillars and arches of communication.

The entire monument is born immersed in the strong Mudejarism of the peninsular architecture of that time, which is deeply rooted in the islands and endures until it becomes a peculiar architectural form as shown in all its wooden coffered ceilings.

The church undergoes abundant reforms, the most important being the one carried out from 1776 by the architect Nicol s Eduardo, who designed a new main chapel.

Currently the architectural container that configures the church is a conglomerate of buildings belonging to few and different traces; Be exaggerated to talk about different styles. Even without taking into account these irregularities, the lack of unity in the construction can be observed, especially when examining the east side of the building; with its canvases on the wall and its irregular windows with those of ...

The roofs of the temple are carpentry (many of them are recent adaptations, inspired by primitive roofs), highlighting those of the collateral chapels of the headboard in which the coffin system is used; It is a technique in which the tablaz n, in these cases decorated with loopwork, hides the knuckles of the almizate. Also interesting is the Portuguese influence cover of the Chapel of San Bartolom, made in 1714 with artisans covered with paintings that receive baroque decorative motifs.

The interior is formed by three naves, with side chapels (some have disappeared in the successive and reconstruction countries), separated by columns of cylindrical shafts whose capitals are carved with plant motifs, cruiser and main chapel flanked by sides.

The cruise and the main chapel were corrected at the beginning of the 18th century, and it was rebuilt in 1785 by Diego Nicol s Eduardo, forming a very individualized body in relation to the rest of the complex; It is characterized by the division of the presbytery into two contiguous sections covered with vedas of third parties.

Surprisingly, the feet of the ships adopt the same solution as the head of the temple, this may be due to the result of some of those interventions.

Until the nineteenth century cemeteries do not arise in the Canary Islands, so that they were previously buried inside churches, convents and hermitages. It was in 1787 when the obligation to build cemeteries outside the towns was established, according to Royal Decree promulgated by Carlos III, in order to end the entrenched custom of burying in sacred precincts, but in the Canary Islands this mandate The first cemetery, that of San Juan, was not complied with in La Laguna, and it was not built until 1814. In the case of the church of Nuestra Sera de la Concepcion, and prior to 1814, burials were carried out not inside the temple but also outside, for lack of space, occupying what is currently the Plaza del Doctor Olivera, the surroundings of the tower and the street of Los Bolos. In the latter was the ossuary known as El Carnero , which was built in 1563 by mandate of the Lcdo.Aitituno, Can nigo Magistral of the Cathedral of Canaria.

ILLUSTRIOUS PEOPLE

Inside the church there are buried many illustrious characters, but at the moment only a few requests are visible, such as those of Juan L. Pez Su rez (1914-1974), parish priest of the Church, buried in the High Altar ; and at the foot of the ship, that of Fernando D az and his wife Damiana Hern ndez, dating from 1614; those of capit n L zaro de Abreu (? - 1724), Counselor of the Treasury and Veedor of the People of War of Tenerife; Juan Francisco de Castilla, Lieutenant Colonel, Governor of the Castle of Paso ...

After the conquest and colonization of Tenerife in 1496, the Diocesan Pastor of Tenerife, Diego de Muros, proceeded to divide the parish of La Laguna and its tithes into two parishes and two benefits, that of La Laguna, proper, and that of Taoro. The first root in the Church of Our Lady of Conception and the second in what was then called Santiago, on the site occupied by the Spanish Royal (Los Realejos). The creation date of the Benefit of La Laguna is doubtful, and it is known with certainty that the first known beneficiary, Rodrigo de Argumedo, canigo de Cdiz, was appointed by Carlos V in 1514 and never came to the island, limited to collect their income through proxies. In the following years, and within the Benefit of La Laguna, the affiliated or attached churches of Santa Cruz, El Sauzal, Taganana and Candelaria were established; and in the Benefit of Taoro, that of San Marcos de Icod and San Pedro de Daute. These temples were the only ones in Tenerife in 1515 when Bishop S. Mace celebrated his S node. Subsequently, between 1515 and 1530, the Church of Our Lady of Conception had created two annexes in the Tegueste Valley: the churches of Tegueste and Tejina. With the passage of time their parish jurisdiction was diminished and many of the affiliated churches became independent.
