CASA LA ALHONDIGA

San Cristóbal de La Laguna
- Arquitectura Civil y Doméstica. Anterior al S.XX -

It was built at the beginning of the 18th century with Felipe V reigning and Jose Antonio de Ayala being Corregidor, as the cover inscription reads.

This building is named after occupying the site of the former Alh ndiga, a public building for the sale of wheat and other merchandise, which was administered by the Consistory of the Island.

The appearance of its facade dates back to the 18th century, with a triangle-shaped finish made in the 19th century.

You can also recognize in the past the use of merchant inn, because according to the etymology of the word that comes from the Spanish-Arabic word "al-fudnaq" the meaning is deep. In fact it was used as a barracks, Inn and party headquarters successively during the 19th century.

Casa La Alhondiga

At the end of the 19th century, the famous architect Manuel de Ora reformed the facade in the neoclassical way with the intention of converting the building into a theater, the project not being completed due to lack of resources.

In the facade all the gaps are distributed symmetrically with respect to the main door.

The two-storey building has the windows distributed symmetrically in each of its floors and aligned vertically with each other.

The access door is framed in gray stone and topped with a shield also in stone with the inscription: reigning Felipe V and being Corregidor Jos Antonio de Ayala

Along the façade, a stone calo z unfolds as well as a cornice in its upper part finished off in Africa.

The facade cladding is executed with white painted lime mortar.
