SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE
- Arquitectura Civil y Doméstica. S.XX y Posterior -

The center of culture and modern art Tenerife Espacio de las Artes TEA is the work of Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron who have been awarded the Pritzker Prize for architecture in 2001. His studio located in the city of Basel has 19 associates and 330 collaborators working in more than 40 projects in Europe, North America and Asia.

It is a cultural complex that houses the contemporary museum Scar Dom nguez Institute, the Photographic Center on Tenerife Island and the Central Municipal Library.

The project was developed between 1999 and 2007 and its execution between 2002 and 2008.

The permanent collection that the TEA has today is based on a selection of the work of the well-known surrealist painter, a native of the island of Tenerife, Scar Dom Nguez, this collection has been baptized as: Scar Dom Nguez: Between the Myth and dream.

Herzog & Meuron conceive the project as a new road that crosses the building diagonally by connecting the upper part of the General Serrador Bridge through a ramp with the edge of the Barranco de Santos. In its passage towards the ravine, the road widens transforming itself into an unusual triangular and semi-covered space in the heart of the cultural center, an open and accessible square for all, animated by the cafeteria of the museum, which serves not only the building , but also to the beautiful space under the wide and shady canopy of the existing trees in the Barranco.

The construction typology of ASD is based on courtyards. Elongated patios are important in many ways, providing natural light, views and guidance for visitors and users of museum and library spaces. One of them, between the office and the wings of the museums of the complex is planted with typical plants of the island. The building focuses on a series of diagonal elements in plan and sloping floors that include a ramp, so that the public space penetrates the building and converges in the courtyard and responds to the difficulties that such a large infrastructure entails from the urban, static, topographic and geographical point of view.

It is an architectural complex of approximately 20,622 square meters. In addition to the different exhibition halls it has a library, an auditorium, a restaurant, a shop, a public square, numerous offices and several stores
