SUEÑO DE LOS CONTINENTES (MARTÍN CHIRINO)

This work by the sculptor Mart n Chirino (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 1925), the artist of the spirals and the lady, who stands in the center of the Plaza de Europa in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, formed by a geometric iron figure , in the form of a spiral, which represents the wind as a symbol of nature. It weighs approximately 5000 Kg.

The sculpture starts from the center of the base, vertically, in a curved prism-shaped structure concentrated in a block that is the core of a downward spiral, which is born at the top, takes a meandering path and dies at a point from the base.

It is located on a low-rise quadrangular base, bordered with ceo gray granite sheets, whose corners have reflectors and whose interior surface is made with slate tiles. For the sculptor it was a different experience than the ones he had faced before. The author broke with his first approaches of flat spirals to turn it into a problem of height spiral, a spiral where the movement makes the viewer participate as it surrounds, moves away or approaches the sculpture. This is one of the few examples in which the square-sculpture, sculpture-square are interrelated.

Once the first studies of the space, the sculptor made a model that moves to the square and place on a plane of sta. Mart n Chirino L pez (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, March 1, 1925) is a Spanish sculptor. Co-founder of the El Paso group in 1957, Chirino mainly uses iron and his work is part of abstract art. His sculptures comprise both the lack of narrative components as well as formal and symbolic wealth.
