Polychrome wood sculpture about 157 cm high created in the School of Arts and Crafts in Sarri (Barcelona), at the end of the 19th century. This image comes from the batch of works sent to Venezuela by the School of Arts and Crafts of Sarri (Barcelona), which carried the steam of the Compachat General French Transatlica Flachat, when it was shipwrecked on February 16, 1898 in the vicinity of the Lighthouse from Anaga. TEXT: u2018 [ u2026] The torrero of the Anaga Lighthouse, Antonio L Pez-Balboa Loureiro, alerted by the constant sound of the horn of a steam, in demand for help, recounts that, on February 15, 1898, at 23:30, he approached the coast in search of survivors, and found a farmer from the Las Bodegas neighborhood who was trying to open a box of zinc that had been dragged by the waves to the coast. Inside it there were two other wooden boxes; one with an image of Christ Crucified (Christ of the Shipwreck) with dismembered arms, since it was the way to pack it; and, in the other, an Immaculate Conception, an image to be worshiped at the house of Ambrosia Mel an until 1912 when it was ceded to the church. Tradition tells that, the goatherd, disappointed at not having found objects of material value inside the boxes, gives the extremities of the image with the regimen of his spear and, since then, lays the rest of his days . In the last two years, the Heritage Area of the Island Council of Tenerife and the Nivariense Diocese have promoted the recovery of an important part of the religious heritage of Taganana. Some actions that have returned the original aspect to several pieces that had been distorted by unfortunate interventions very frequent in the past. The restoration of the artistic heritage allows the progress of the scientific research, because it should not be forgotten that, apart from their original devotional character, these pieces are witnesses of a little and some facts that shaped the social and religious evolution from a town. This exhibition, together with the pieces already intervened, includes others that have not yet been restored and whose presence is justified by their importance in the historical development of the parish. Within the framework of these actions, the Ccucu Conservation and Restoration team led by the restorer Mar a Fernanda Guiti n Garre, has intervened the images of Jesus s Nazarene, Our Lady of Sorrows and the carvings of the Deceased Christ, Saint Luc a and San Francisco de As s. Also, under his direction in the Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property Heritage of the University of La Laguna, the Christ of the Shipwreck has been restored.
