JIRI GEORG DOKOUPIL (CARTEL DEL CARNAVAL 1987)

The year 1987 represents a new twist to the history of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife carnival posters. The new author was Jiri georg Dokoupil (Bruntal, Krnov. Czech Republic, 1954), a Czech painter, who had found in Tenerife an ideal place for his residence and his work, by the hand of Galer a leyendecker, who I represented him and that I made his work known in Spain, from an individual exhibition in 1985. The poster was not exempt from politics, not because the composition was abstract, or difficult to read and interpret. On the contrary, it was figurative and well explained, even direct. It is precisely attributed to the self-confidence and even a certain provocation (the orita seems so daring, that it even puts a mask on the same sun, while the moon conforms to a false mustache). Dokoupil does not pretend to greater importance, but rather to reflect his own Canarian experience, a lush orita rests on a beach, which is the entire island (the fold of his left leg serves to represent the Teide peak). he uses certain types, such as palm trees, which give him a rather Caribbean air or, in addition to some tunnels, almost more like ctus or Mexican nopales. of similar dates, to which Dokoupil signs the Carnival poster, is his series entitled Madonnas in Xtasis (1985-1987)
