The church of Our Lady of the Snows of Taganana houses the parish of the Anaga region, being also one of the first to be founded after the conquest on the island of Tenerife. The current temple sits on the old hermitage, which will begin to be built in the 16th century (1505) to end 10 years later, and it is the largest representation of religious artistic heritage that the Region has . Among the elements of character and heritage importance that we can find inside the temple, the image of the titular virgin of the Nuestra Sera de las Nieves church stands out, which corresponds to a polychrome wood carving dated from the 15th century, and the triptych of the Adoration of the Kings, a Flemish table made in Antwerp of the 16th century (1575), in leo on oak wood, which is considered one of the most notable artistic jewels of the Canarian heritage and demonstrates the economic importance that it reached the town thanks to the export of sugar first and then, the wine industry. In 2006, the temple was declared a Property of Cultural Interest with a category of monument in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. |
It is the typical rural church, within the classic religious constructions of the islands in the first years after the conquest. There are three naves separated by semicircular arches on columns of the Tuscan order with drums of canter to red as well as the cover of the temple and main chapel in the central part. Wood paneled mud jar style under the pair roof and knuckle of the gable roof. The L-shaped sword is located on the left side of the facade. CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM AND MATERIALS In the main façade we find the cover of a half-pointed arch-shaped canter, at the top of which a glazed ass opens. Closing the large structure of three ships, we find thick mason walls with detail of red tuff ashlars at the corners and front. The red tuff masonry sword is transformed into an L-shaped structure, on whose sides there are three semicircular arches, 2-1, for the location of the bells. In the upper part of the planes, a lowered arch is raised as the upper end. The roof is arranged to two waters by ship and closes with ceramic curve tile. Inside, the ships are separated from each other by means of semicircular arches on Tuscan columns. |
From 1512 onwards, the new lateral ships, the ship of the Rosary and the Sant Sacramento are introduced, the current structure of three ships is built and the materials with better qualities are renewed. Already in 1728, the extension works would be completed with the construction of the main chapel. In 2006, the Cabildo and the Bishopric of Tenerife proceeded to carry out the remodeling and restoration of the temple, with a budget of 858,000 u20AC according to sources (80 -20 ). These works were carried out from large-scale works such as the restoration of roofing, coffered ceilings and countries, as well as floors, replacing the floors of chasnera slab and insulating the building of possible leaks (since this will have been the fundamental cause of deterioration thereof), and carpenters as. In July 2016, the opening and reopening of the temple to worship will proceed. |
ARTISTIC HERITAGE The church of Our Lady of the Snows treasures an artistic heritage of undoubted value, composed of three altarpieces and a large repertoire of works of sculpture, painting and goldsmithing. Altarpieces At the moment three altarpieces are conserved in the temple: the altarpiece of Sant simo Sacramento, the altarpiece of Our Lady of the Rosary and the main altarpiece. The altarpiece of the Sant simo Sacramento is an interesting Baroque copy of which not only the exact date of its execution is ignored, but even that of its settlement in the front of the collateral chapel of the Gospel, although they may refer to its gold some items registered in the accounts of the Cofrad a Sacramental, between 1737 and 1740. Sculpture Among the great number of sculptures found within the religious building, one with special attention is worth mentioning: the Sant simo Cristo del Naufragio and the Virgin of Our Lady of Snows. Index of im genes sculpture: Our Lady of the Snows, Santa Luc a, Santo Cristo del Socorro, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Carmen, Saint Francis of As s, Sweet or Holy Name of Jesus, Saint Jos , Our Lady of Sorrows or Solitude, Jesus Nazarene, Santo Domingo de Guzm n, Sant simo Cristo del Naufragio, La Magdalena, the Immaculate Conception, Saint John the Evangelist, Christ Deceased, all these images besides others made during the twentieth century, such as the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the ... |
