Idittu (Néstor Basterretxea)

It can be defined as a pillar made of oak wood arranged vertically, with cavities that generate an organic sensation in it. It leaves a kind of appendix that has been painted a golden color as well as the nicks on its front. The outer part of the piece is painted with a matte black color, it rises on a pedestal of opaque and brown colors.

It is part of a collection of 19 pieces called 'osmogica Vasca ' made of wood, most of the collection was donated to the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. His theme revolves around Basque mythology.

IDITTU: Animal-shaped night genius, which is announced with a flame of fire in the darkness of the night. By emptying, Basterretxea opens concavities and reliefs, which, mentally, evoke the forms of a mold of strong organic imprint.

Idittu (Néstor Basterretxea)

N stor Basterretxea Arzadun was born in Bermeo in Vizcaya on May 6, 1924, he was a Spanish sculptor, painter and film director. His childhood is compromised by the political work of his father to belong to the Basque nationalist party. So he is forced to be exiled in Iparralde then in Paris and finally, after the Second World War to Argentina. It is in Argentina where he begins his training process as an artist, beginning to make some advertising illustrations and if he was awarded a scholarship in 1945 that motivates him to make his first exhibition. He returns to Spain in 1952, that is when he comes into contact with Jorge Oteiza and his contemporaries who influence him to be part of team 57. He always highlighted his groundbreaking character and defender of a latent modernity in art. Since the 1960s, he devoted himself mainly to sculpture and experimental art, in addition to industrial design, leaving in the background, the rest of the plastic activities, among others, photography, painting, and even cinema. His artistic work led him to be the culture advisor of the Basque government in addition to receiving the EuskoIkaskuntza-Caja Laboral de Humanities, Culture, Arts and Social Sciences Award from EuskoIkaskuntzaque he received in 2005.
