ERMITA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL ROSARIO

El Rosario
- Arquitectura Religiosa. Ermitas -

On the south coast of Tenerife, as the slope of Mount Esperanza descends, in the municipality of Rosario, we find the Machado neighborhood and in it, the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The Hermitage is in a privileged place due to its height, from its square you can see the Punta de Anaga and the Poris de Abona Lighthouse, extremes of the island that according to chronicles and legends relate that will serve as an observation point No of the corsair Amaro Pargo from his house located in the surroundings of the Hermitage.

The location of the hermitage was due to the fact that it was on the road that the pilgrims made during their visit to the Virgin of Candelaria, being one of the oldest buildings on the island.

The Hermitage of Ntra. Sra. Del Rosario is one of the oldest hermitages on the island of Tenerife. However, the exact date of its construction is unknown, although the first reference to it is thanks to an investigation by Fray Alonso de Espinosa who found a text dated in 1534, and reflected it in his book History of Our Lady of Candelaria of 1594, in this text explains that this hermitage was built thanks to the alms of the town and establishes its location on the road of Our Lady of Candelaria. If we consider the appointment of Espinosa, it is concluded that the hermitage could have been built before the 30th of the 16th century. Its popularity grew soon, because it was as mentioned earlier in the middle of the road, referred to above, and was considered a place of dec ...

Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Rosario

The Canarian-style hermitage draws a rectangular plant 29 meters long and 9 meters wide. Keep in mind that part of the 29 meters long, specifically 9, belong to what is believed to have been the original hermitage, and currently houses the presbytery. This older part appears perfectly delimited from the rest of the construction by a wooden arch and a step leading to the main altar. The left side wall is smooth, without any gap and with a masonry bench attached to the wall of some 6 meters in length. On the right is another similar bank.

On the 10-meter façade, the framed access door is located between two pilasters topped by smooth capitals where the semicircular arch rests. On the right side is the other door of the same dimensions as the main one, preceded by five steps that after the construction of the buttresses and the elevation of the level of the square were two.

On the facade is located at its right end a sword that houses the bell tower consisting of two bells.

The main chapel, in its current state seems to be from the seventeenth century, judging by its roof made up of a coffered ceiling of Limabord n, and small octagonal almizate, decorated with rhombuses and ribbons.

The nave was later enlarged as evidenced by the carpanel arch that separates both enclosures, located on the wall of the primitive facade of the main chapel, which could be extended in the same seventeenth century by the dates on which s ...

Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Rosario

Apart from the extension that took place in the seventeenth century, a century after the rise of what is now the main chapel, the hermitage of Our Lady of the Rosary was intervened in the last century, specifically in 1965 , when buttresses that are visible from the outside were placed. On the other hand, the wooden roof covering the main chapel is the original, but that of the rest of the hermitage was replaced in the 1990s.

In what is known as the Brothers' Room, the floor in poor condition was replaced by a stone floor different from the rest of the hermitage and extracted from the Casa de los Mesa.
