EL CALVARIO

ARONA
- Arquitectura Religiosa. Calvarios -

The construction of El Calvario dates from the end of the 19th century (1877), although the beautification works lasted between 1904 and 1909. Located on a promontory from where the Municipality can be seen, it is a modest building, but of great value artistic and historical. At first it was a simple wall, where the three crosses rose. Its current architectural importance is given by the contribution of gray and reddish stonework that determines the whole complex, not common in the Calvarios of the Canary Islands, in contrast to the white walls. El Calvario serves as an architectural and theatrical space for the recreation of the catechetical values of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ, although it is not created "expressly" for the celebration of Holy Week, it is related to these liturgical moments.
